Food Coloring May Be Pretty, But…

Did you know many of the most common foods (not found on the paleo diet food list) have food coloring added to them to make them look appetizing? This alone does not sound dangerous, but the actual chemicals to obtain these colors are very problematic. In the 1970’s the FDA (Food and Drug Administration) banned red dye no. 2 because it was found that in high doses it would actually cause cancer in laboratory rats. The yellow no. 5 dye was found to increase hyperactivity in children by a British study in 2007 and to worsen asthma symptoms by studies that go back to the 1950’s.

Naturally Sweet, Just Makes Sense

High fructose corn syrup has received a lot of negative media in the past few years and for good reason. This sweetener that is derived from corn, an alternative to natural sugar from sugar cane, has some major health concerns connected to it. This sweetener is found in soft drinks, junk food and just about anything that is sweet and carries a decent shelf like at the grocery store. It has been connected to the raise of obesity in America and the body does not metabolize it in the same way as sugar based sweeteners.

Mercury contaminants are found in it and this has yet to be regulated by the FDA. The companies that use this in their foods have spent millions to “educate” the public on its safety, yet the extraction process is still secret and unknown to all. Living the Mind-Body Lifestyle

When I’m talking to mind-body newbies, they often ask me if I like living the mind-body  lifestyle . They are usually worried that they’ll have to torture themselves for life with something un-fun and limiting. Happily, the mind-body  lifestyle  is quite the opposite! Today’s article is an example of what it’s like to live this way, so that you can come sit in my living room with me and experience how I stay pain-free.

It goes like this: All day long, every day, my body is letting me know important things. How is it telling me? Via emotions. How do I know I’m having emotions? Via body sensations. So, my first step is to stay clued in to what my body and emotions are telling me. If I miss an emotional clue, my body will let me know with a little tension or some other small signal. All I have to do is notice these signals, and I can easily stay healthy and comfortable in my body. It’s only if I were to ignore them that I might get a hint of pain.

Today is a perfect example of what it’s like to use the mind-body maintenance plan.

During a session with a client this morning, I noticed I was having trouble speaking. I don’t have a sore throat, I am not sick, and yet I was losing my voice. On my next call of the day, my colleagues noticed this and asked me if I had a cold.

“No,” I answered, “and I’m not exactly sure what my body is trying to tell me.”

There was silence while we all sat with that statement. It had the ring of a big fat lie. (No judgment here – it’s quite normal that we all lie to ourselves frequently. It’s actually quite good to find the lie, because then you can easily figure out what’s really going on.)

I sighed. “Ok, so I do know what my body is telling me. I am not up for coaching right now, and I have a really full schedule because I’ve been out of town and will also be gone next week.”

My colleague said, “Why not reschedule your sessions?”

My insides cringed. My mind panicked momentarily. And then, there it was. The THOUGHT behind this whole thing.

“I will be disappointing them,” I answered. “They need their sessions, and I won’t be here for them.”

Which is one of the old patterns I have that leads me away from taking care of myself and straight into physical issues. I’ve spent many a year trying not to disappoint people, ignoring my own body/self, and ending up flattened as a result. This pattern does not serve me well.

The truth is that I must take care of myself in order to be of any help to any client. In fact, I might even disappoint my clients more by showing up and not being able to really do my job. My wise inner being knew that it was time to step back from coaching and take care of me, but I was afraid to follow this wise instruction. So, even though I knew in my heart what I truly needed, I plowed forward with coaching.

My brilliant body let me know that I was off track. It took away my voice.

Isn’t it fascinating how our minds can yank us away from doing what is best for ourselves? Because my mind was afraid of disappointing clients, I was ignoring my soul’s request for some quiet rest time. I was ignoring the emotional message, so my body amped up the volume a bit with the voice removal.

Hopefully you can see the process. As I noticed what was going on with myself, I uncovered a belief system that was causing me to work directly against what I really needed. As soon as I saw that, I was able to decide what was truly best for me, and choose whether or not to act on that belief. I listened to my body, and therefore we are on good terms. I won’t get sick, I won’t have pain – I don’t need the alarm to ring any louder than it just did.

So my body and I struck a deal. I would finish out today, but cancel clients for tomorrow and take some serious rest and self-nurturing time. As soon as I made that deal, I felt an uplifting, lightening sensation in my chest. My voice got clearer. I felt the resonance of alignment with myself.

What I like about this is that there’s no fear involved. There’s no imprisonment. It’s not like following some hideously boring diet for the rest of my life. It’s freeing, actually, to always be checking in with my body and listening to its messages. Even if I need a slight alarm system warning here and there, it’s nothing scary. It’s just something to notice, learn from, and take action on so I can keep creating health.

I’ve noticed the more I listen to the messages, the quieter they are. The alarms don’t need to be very loud anymore. Most of the time, I hear the whisper of my emotional guidance system and don’t need any major body warnings. I used to get a full-on chest cold, a headache, a foot pain, or some other alarm. I love that today the body warning didn’t even have to create any discomfort for me to hear it. Nothing in my body hurts, but I still get the message, loud and clear. This is cause for celebration!

You, too, can arrive at this point where you listen to what your body is saying, day in and day out. It’s not a bad thing at all – in fact, it’s pretty dang cool to have such a helpful GPS system with which to navigate through life. I always know what’s best for me, what will lead me to health and happiness, and what my next step is. There’s a sense of confidence in that knowledge. Strength. Peace. And of course – health.

Top 10 Anais Nin Works

A controversial author of her times whose work was largely ignored at the time of publication, Anais Nin gained wide spread acceptance and acclaim in the 1960s when she garnered acceptance as one of the most prolific female writers who had dared to dabble in the elusive genre of female eroticism. Nin’s work primarily included her diaries that bespeak of a woman’s journey of self discovery through the various stages of her life.

She penned down her experiences of over 30 years, from 1931 to 1974 in her memoirs which today serve as an inspiration for women across the world who are trying to break out of stereotypical gender roles and biases.

D.H Lawrence: An Unprofessional Study

This was Nin’s first published work which probably whet her appetite for the controversial books that she found fame in. The book was her tribute to her literary hero DH Lawrence. It was a study of some of the author’s popular work. By the time the book went into publication; most critics had shunned Lawrence’s work. Not only was it unusual for Nin to choose his work for her book but also the fact that she was a woman who appreciated DH Lawrence’s writing which was often laced with sexual content was equally surprising


This was Nin’s last published novel which was notable in its shift from her regular style. This novel had none of the familiar characters that Nin’s fans were expecting. Also, as the name suggests, the book had almost two dozen important characters and there was quite a bit of geographical movement which was absent in her other work.

Winter of Artifice

This was Nin’s second published novels. It originally went into publication in Paris and gives a candid review of Nin’s incestuous relationship with her father.

Under a Glass Bell

Claimed to be one of the finest works from the author; the book was the first of several to be printed in Nin’s own press. A collection of short stories that touched upon several facets of life from writing journals to late abortions etc; many critics regard it as her finest work. Under a glass bell finally got Nin the recognition that she deserved.

House of Incest

This was Nin’s first fictional book. Although most readers expected to read a graphical description of Nin’s liaisons with her lovers, this book revolved around the central character trying to escape from a dream state that she finds herself trapped in.

Delta of Venus

A book with a strong incline towards the exploration of sexuality and eroticism, it contains several short stories with some of the characters finding their way into more than one story. The book was written for a person identified simply as the “collector” for his private consumption.

Little Birds

Although the book was written in 1940 when she was commissioned by the ‘Collector” along with other writers, this work from Nin was published two years after her death. The book includes 13 short stories that explore various sexual themes from lesbianism to pedophilia.

Cities of the Interior

This was a collection of 5 novels from Anais Nin; Ladders of Fire, the Four Chambered Heart, Children of the Albatross, Seduction of the Minotaur and Spy in the House of Love. Of the 5 books in this series, the Four Chambered Heart was autobiographical in nature while the Spy in the House of Love revolved around the journey of Sabina who is considered to be an alter ego of the author.

The Diary of Anais Nin

This is a published version of Nin’s private diary; the entries in the manuscript started when Nin was just 11 and she continued writing in it till her death. The diaries are available in seven volumes while the expurgated versions of the diaries contain more sexually graphic material than the original published manuscript.

Henry and June: From A Journal of Love: the Unexpurgated Diary of Anaïs Nin (1931-1932)

This is a book which was published in 1986 which is based upon her unpublished diaries. It has a few similarities to her published diaries but also quite a few differences. It focuses on her very passionate affair with Henry Miller and his wife June Miller.

The Real Happiness in Life

What is happiness? Where do we find it? How do we obtain it? I readily concede that it’s important to have sufficient money for our needs, but beyond that, money has little to do with true happiness.

Happiness is the most intangible state we are seeking in our whole lives. In our pursuit of real happiness in life, we experienced too much pain and sacrifices.There are even times when we lose our own source of happiness. But, there are only a few who knew that real happiness lies within ourselves.

Happiness does not always require success, prosperity or attainment. Real happiness ever has its root in unselfishness-its blossom in love of some kind. The present is an age of pleasure-seeking, and men are losing their sanity in the mad rush for sensations that do but excite and disappoint. In this day of counterfeits, adulterations, and base imitations, the devil is busier than he has ever been in the course of human history, in the manufacture of pleasures, both old and new; and these he offers for sale in most attractive fashion, falsely labeled, ‘Happiness.

What is happiness then? How does it differ from mere pleasure? Happiness leaves no bad aftertaste, it is followed by no depressing reaction; it calls for no repentance, brings no regret, entails no remorse; pleasure too often makes necessary repentance, contrition, and suffering; and, if indulged to the extreme, it brings degradation and destruction.

True happiness is lived over and over again in memory, always with a renewal of the original good; a moment of unholy pleasure may leave a barbed sting, which, like a thorn in the flesh, is an ever-present source of anguish. Happiness is not akin with levity, nor is it one with light-minded mirth.

It seems happiness is something we all desire but few find. Is it a career? Is happiness in our ‘stuff’? Looking for happiness in things will never satisfy. In the end, we find ourselves just looking further.

Just don’t take yourself too seriously. True perfection is really accepting your imperfections. In this way, you’re not struggling with or rejecting yourself. Make friends with yourself. Never beat yourself down because of too many emotional issues. It is natural to feel everything, whatever it may be.

Try to meditate. There is an overwhelming amount of research showing how meditation changes the circuits in the part of the brain associated with contentment and happiness and stimulates the “feel-good” factor. Meditating on love and kindness makes you much, much happier! And the only way to know this is to try it, so don’t hesitate. It has been proven that even as little as 10 minutes of meditation a day can lead to physical changes in the brain that improve concentration and focus, calm the nervous system, and help you to become more kind and compassionate, and even more humorous.

Let go of negativity. Learn to forgive and forget. See every challenge as an opportunity for further growth. Express gratitude for what you have. Don’t worry about the little things. Take plenty of “worry vacations” where you train your mind not to worry for a certain length of time.

See the humor in life and in our experiences. Take life less seriously and learn to laugh at yourself. Serve and be kind to others. Treat everyone with kindness. Speak well of others. Truly listen to others. Support them without bringing yourself into it. Be careful with your words. Speak gentler, kinder, and wiser. Respect others and their free will. Put your trust in others and be trusted in return.

Work as part of a whole. See others as partners in your efforts. Practice generosity and giving without expecting anything in return. Live in the present. Don’t replay negative events or worry about the future. Accept and celebrate impermanence. Be grateful for your life, for each moment of every day.

Observe yourself in the moment. Choose a healthy lifestyle. Keep a daily routine. Wake up at the same time every morning, preferably early. Get enough sleep. Don’t overeat and try to practice healthy self-control. Exercise daily to the point of sweating.

Laugh more. Laughter is the best medicine. Practice deep breathing and yoga. The body and mind are connected. Take care of your spirit. Strive to always learn new things. Get creative.

Be inwardly free. Live minimally and simply. Often extravagant living brings more stress, not more satisfaction. De-clutter your home to de-clutter your mind. Feel good in your own home. Make it your sanctuary by keeping it clean, organized, and uplifting. Go without certain things you think you need.

You have many choices to make during your lifetime. When it comes to your health, the choices you make are inevitably far-reaching. There could be severe consequences should you carry out the wrong decisions. Never forget gambling with your health is gambling with your future.

With Type 2 diabetes, the situation is no different. Although this is something you may not want to hear, this form of diabetes is a lifestyle choice from its onset all the way through development. On a positive note, not all decisions in regards to Type 2 diabetes involve grim circumstances. If you are motivated, you can undo the disease. You might not be able to reverse some of the damage already done. But, there is good news in the reports of those who have successfully recovered. You can stop many side effects in their tracks, and regenerate damaged organs and systems. More importantly, you can regain good health. It is infinitely a better alternative to being ill and at risk of an untimely death.
